Retired U.S. Army Specialist Joseph Gilmore was finally awarded the Soldier’s Medal of Valor for bravery he exhibited 42 years ago during a fire on Fort Carson.
“Really, I can’t even tell you what happened when the fire broke out at the armory on base,” Gilmore said. “When the first blast of flames hit me in the face, my whole body went on remote control.”
The modest soldier served from 1972 to 1979. He asked about the medal several times but could never get a straight answer about why he was never presented it.
It wasn’t until the family contacted Rep. Diana DeGette’s office that the Army decided to find records it said were somehow lost that related to his actions in 1973.
So Tuesday, at the new digs for VFW Post No. 1, with top brass, family and friends on hand, Gilmore finally got the medal he earned all these years ago.
