I had a friend of mine who fractured some vertebrae while in Navy boot camp, and he was given a medical discharge, paychecks to help with the pain medication, and he also gets to annually see a doctor to make sure that it healed correctly etc... so I'm not sure if the severity of the injuries matter, but from that example I would assume that he could get VA benefits.

I believe they should be entitled to some benefits for a short term, they made a valiant effort to serve, we should help them get back on their feet.

That soldier after 3 weeks in the hospital got out of bed against doctors recommendation and reported back to Basic Military training and ended up fulfilling his 8 years of Air Force service.

SrA Edward Rodriguez - Now that raises a question of did the injuries come back, persist or get worse in anyway as a result of not following his doctor's orders. If they did then one could argue he shouldn't receive benefits because he failed to follow a lawful order for the sake of his own health. That's like having a broken leg and going out and running immediately despite the doctor saying stay off your feet. You are obviously going to get worse and it can be assumed you did it in order to gain further benefits that had you followed the order you wouldn't have needed.
I ask that because even though you said they went back to Basic and made it through 8 years they could still have residual health issues as a result of their own negligence in which case you shouldn't receive benefits. Doc tells you what to do for a reason, it's so you get better. If you don't listen and let yourself get worse then the government shouldn't have to compensate you for it.

I appreciate your input sir. After three weeks of hospitalization he was given three choices: 1) Go back to training 2) Re-phase back in training 3) Get out of Military. He stayed in and now is having health issues due to three options. His claim has been in since 02/2015 so we will see what the VA says.
