Are autonomous offensive weapons the future? Should they be banned?

I am all for having weapons that our troops aren't directly inside of receiving fire during the operation as long as a troop is in direct control of the vehicle/weapon from another location and has the means to shut down or recall the device if necessary. I do not like the idea of having something pre-programmed to do everything on it's own without human interaction at some level though. Too many possibilities for operations gone wrong.
