In scope and most impact to the world, I would say the central role they had in the Allied victory in World War II. They defeated the Japanese Navy in a series of decisive battles (Midway, Leyte Gulf, etc.) and provided essential support to Allied ground forces in Europe and the Pacific.

In pivotal impact to this country, I would say the crucial part they played in the Revolutionary War despite going up against the 800lb gorilla of the time. Without some key victories or supporting roles (Lake Champlain, Yorktown, etc.) it's likely the outcome would have been much different for the United States.

Given the time frame you mentioned. I'd probably say Midway. Just turned the tide of everything in the pacific, solid "half time adjustments," better use of intelligence plus coordinated sea and air assets.

It amazes me how many people don't realize we still could've lost the war when the Battle of Yorktown happened. French ships coming in with provisions, and more importantly: silver to pay our troops was a key save.

The Navy as a Presidential grooming ground -- every president from 1961 to 1993 save for Ronald Reagan was a Navy veteran.

Iowa-class battleships, the F-14s, Navy SEALs... Yeah I know that's more modern so...

How about its absolute unit of crazy badassery during the Revolutionary War, or that the USS Constitution was never defeated in battle, and reigns today as one of the world's oldest ships still in commission. One of my cooler discoveries upon visiting the ship itself was seeing a plaque of previous officers, and the 1st Commandant of the Marine Corps was also the first person to command the USS Constitution.

CPT Lawrence Cable And the Continental Congress only authorized a couple hundred Marines. They played their part as did the Navy. If that wasn't the case we wouldn't have bothered with November 10 and October 13 being their respective birthdays.

Also, no love for John Paul Jones?

SGT Aaron Atwood he asked for significant events for the US Navy, and there really weren't any in the Revolutionary War. Nor was there any decisive actions with the US Marines during the revolution. There is a reason that the Marine hymn first line has"to the shores of Tripoli ". The start of the Marine Corps reputation was really in the Barbary pirate wars. I think John Paul Jones was heroic, but the reality is if he had lost it would have not made any difference in the long-term outcome of the revolution.

CPT Lawrence Cable - Nobody asked for significant events that I'm aware of; just one's favorite parts of the Navy. I rattled off mine; end of story. Tactically and strategically the Navy/Marines didn't have much going for them during the Revolution, but the individual attitudes, responses, overall potential, and in case of the Marines their origin story... made future Americans want both; thus Krulak's famous line of, "America doesn't need a Marine Corps. America wants a Marine Corps." The Navy as a whole is also the only branch mentioned by name in the Constitution to be maintained at all times.

SGT Aaron Atwood - SSG Madden asked for the Navy's biggest accomplishments. There really weren't any during the Revolution. To be picky, the militia clause is in Article One also has the Provide For wording, so there is a Constitutional mandate to keep a trained and armed Militia/National Guard.
But all of that was after the Revolutionary War. We disbanded the Navy for almost 11 years after the fighting stopped and didn't have a warship again until 1797. The wars against the Barbary states were really the birthplace of the US Navy and legend of the US Marines. Because of that war, the US had a fairly effective fighting Navy during the War of 1812.
