Transitioning from a military career to civilian life can be both exciting and challenging.

One of the most crucial steps in this transition is finding a career that aligns with your skills, interests, and goals.

Which of these questions do you think resonates with your transition to civilian life/career?

1. What skills did I acquire during my military service?
2. What activities or subjects genuinely excite and engage me?
3. What values are important to me in a career?

All of them.

When looking at the next career, we should not only be looking at what we CAN do, but what we WANT to do. Being happy with our job makes up for a multitude of other problems (like low pay or demanding work). On the flip side, no amount of money can make someone happy in a job they hate doing.
So, yes, #1 is SUPER important to land the job. But #2 is important to survive in the job. And #3 is important to THRIVE.

If you are looking for a job, #1 is all you need. But for a CAREER? All 3.

Thank you for sharing your valuable insights! You've beautifully summed up the essence of transitioning to a meaningful career. Finding that balance between skills, passion, and values is indeed crucial for a fulfilling career. Your perspective on #1 for landing the job, #2 for surviving it, and #3 for thriving in a career is spot on. It's a holistic approach that can lead to long-term satisfaction and success.

For me it was #3 followed by #1
Had to be some sort of service/helping...I tried working with a defense contractor and was very unhappy.

#3. I learned discipline and the importance of giving everything I do my all.

Jordie Kern - I try to share this desire with my students. I tell them that even though I know most dislike math give it your all and you will be rewarded in some way. The numerical grade they earn is only part of their grade in my classroom. Effort, behavior, and attitude also play into the final grade.
