Our military is the ONLY government organization that the American people still hold in high-regard. Is this an example of the military being tone-deaf and turning against the American People.

I feel it could easily turn out that way. These citizens/veterans are trying to defend those who are not ALLOWED to defend themselves.

LTC (Join to see) - While there are certainly citizens of our country who could justifiably be classified as "enemies", I think that term does not described the overwhelming majority and only describes a very few. The problem with the current Administration and its sheeple supporters is that they are quick to label anybody who does not agree with their ant-American, racist, immoral agenda as enemies.

The problem I see with armed citizens guarding recruiting stations, etc., besides the obvious safety issues with accidental discharges, etc., is that one does not know who they really are. What would keep an ISIS sympathizer to pose as a "security sentry" at a facility and, therefore, have close-in access that he otherwise may not have. Not all ISIS sympathizers and other home-grown terrorists look like the idiot who shot up the facilities in Chattanooga. All I am saying is that having all the unidentified armed folks around our facilities should be a cause for concern and should cause our military personnel to be extra vigilant, as well as armed themselves.

I once saw a Class A Agent discharge his firearm into the floor at Post Finance, A friend of mine, an LTC with an EIB accidentally shot a friend on a civilian range almost killing him . Accidents happen. Great point about sympathizers. We don't know who these people are. We let them in close

While I don't think they are a real threat but they do pose a risk. We are tried how to use weapons. You could just go to a range and see how some wanna-be shooters are. I wouldn't feel comfortable with having them armed around me.

LTC (Join to see) - Were they vetted? Was there a means of verify their training? Are they turning away civilians? A ND is just as deadly as enemy fire.

I agree there are risks. There were also risks leaving recruiting stations and reserve units as soft targets. Which risk is greater?

LTC (Join to see) - I would rather arm the recruiters instead.

They present the image that the U.S. military cannot function without a vigilante group 'protecting' them. I agree with 1LT Eric Rosa that these folks have no proof of training and could be more of a hindrance than help. What happens if some private citizen takes the law into his own hands and is wrong? Who is going to answer that bill? The reality is that every location where people can gather presents a target. The recruiters and their chain of command should continue to work together with local law enforcement to determine the security risks at our recruiting centers. Just having random private citizens with personal weapons does little to solve any perceived increased security risks, but makes them targets as well. Recruiting stations have always been targets for attacks. They used to be bombed from time to time by home-grown lunies and those opposed to US involvement in foreign affairs from what I remember. If we are to mitigate this risk, it has to be a coordinated effort by professionals who are trained/vetted, and this effort must be based on federal and local law enforcement capabilities.

Hell No, These folks are portraying their honor and commitment to the very troop's who don't sleep at night and stand vigilant watch while these people can sleep safely in the comfort of their homes! These resident's are fed up with the political correctness that has come over this country and all the rhetoric our politicians are trying to force feed us ! I for one stand at the ready as well to not only defend our troop's on American soil as well as these patriots, who are willing to lay down their lives for those serving in various billets in CONUS !
I'm a former immigrant from Germany, who became naturalized as a US citizen in 1973 so that I could acquire my Top secret clearance. The only people I view as threats to our military and law enforcement personnel, are those who have switched from their current agenda to radicalism associated with ISIS/Taliban or any other group hell bent on killing western citizens ! So if the shoe fits , keep in mind we will find you and we will kill you to preserve the freedoms of this great nation of ours .
I'm a firm believer of our 2nd amendment rights and a card carrying member of the "NRA" for life, and will not hesitate to raise arms against all enemies both foreign and domestic to the last drop !

I was in the Navy in the mid 1970's. I saw an M14 in boot camp. It had a wooden dowel stuck in the end of the barrel.

I shot a weapon in boot camp. It was a bolt action .22.

I spent 30 years doing ballistics research as a civilian scientist for the U.S. Army after my service. In all that time, although I spent a lot of time on ranges, I never shot a rifle.

My point is not everyone who served in the military is skilled with weapons.

I am bat-shit crazy when it comes to certain things. That surely didn't keep me out of the Navy, in fact, my big feet were a greater obstacle my service than being small-minded. (There were no size 14 boondockers at that time, but I could wear 13's)

I think the cops do a pretty good job of protecting my mom and other folks in town. I love all recruiters (except the one that recruited me -- but that's another story). Still, what's good enough for my mom (in terms of being protected by a stranger with a gun) is likely to be good enough of an E6 recruiter
