What is the essence of being an American (specifically, a Citizen of the United States)?

We are supposed to be a "melting pot." With that said, elements of other cultures can, and do, enter and exist in the US. Many of these elements contribute to the richness of American Society. This is not expected to be an easy question to answer.

To live peacefully in my home without others telling me how to run my home. To live peacefully with my own beliefs without shoving them in the faces of others. To raise my kids to be good human beings. This, to me, is the essence of being an American. Hell, this should be the essence of the whole world. But we all know that is not possible. So, I'm gonna do me, take care of me and mine. You do you, and take care of you and yours.

My response is, I fear, no longer in vogue
-Self-reliant and independent, particularly from government intrusion
-Self-sacrificing
-Benevolent
-Tolerant of respectful opposition
-Free in thought and speech

Yep, I think you're describing what was once our ideal citizen. I think some of this is still valued.

I'm not sure we were "supposed" to be a melting pot, but we are. Still, without secure borders we drift farther away from American values. Citizens are legal residents, not people who initiate their visit by breaking the very laws of U.S. citizenship.
