I am a SSG with 12 years TIS 6 months TIG, and advice or insight would be appreciated such as experiences, promotion potiential, and the process of reclassification. I know I meet all of the qualifications.

Why not look into applying for recruiting duty then apply for conversion to MOS 79R? Recruiting can be very fulfilling and has better prospects after the Army than Retention does. Just my opinion.

I got the word last week (while I was in the Recruiting Commander's Course) that there is serious talk at the 2-star level (USAREC and HRC) and from the USAREC CSM and CMF 79 Proponent SGM. I would go to the HRC and USAREC websites and contact the representatives at USAREC HQ. They have a program called "Recruit the Recruiter". They will assist you in putting in a packet and answer your questions. I wish you the best of luck.

SSG Clark you already know I have done that Recruit the Recruiter packet twice now. So if you want to do one up just let me know wink wink......

I'm probably very late to the discussion, but the 79S MOS definitely is NOT in the process of being eliminated. USAREC is not the Proponent of 79S, the DMPM at the Department of the Army G-1 is. I just left as the 79S Senior Career Management NCO and am currently the USAREC Command Career Counselor.
If you have any questions about being a Career Counselor, look into AR 601-280 Appendix B and DA Pam 611-21. It's the best decision I ever made.

Check out the 79R and the 79S pages on RallyPoint:
https://www.rallypoint.com/specialty/6096
If you click on the "Primary" tab -- you'll see all those who have 79R/79S as their Primary MOS and are currently in that field. If you click on the "Secondary" tab, you'll see all those who have it as a Secondary MOS, and have gone back to more line unit type of role (which sounds like it's what you may want). You can learn best about career opportunities by looking through what other people have done... and you can try to connect with those that you find most interesting and ask to learn how they went about getting there.
I hope that's helpful. Let us know how it goes.
