I was first introduced to this series via the television miniseries (starring Sean Bean), and later ended up reading the Book.
It is set during the Napoleonic War between Britain & France (in Spain), and follows the career of a an officer as he makes his way from commanding smaller to larger units.

Likewise. I try to add a new book (series) once a week, and for whatever reason this one came to mind. Probably saw a Boromir meme, and got the wheels turning.

loved the shows, and the books better - but better yet look up the history of 'The Rifles' and how they changed the british military
Is there a reading list group??
Joseph Conrad's 'Heart of Darkness' the basis of 'Apocalypse Now'
the Anabasis of Zenophon written 400 B.C. the basis for Andre Norton's 'Star Guard' (oe of the 1st SF books I ever read) and more recent 'March Upcountry Series' (Military SF) by John Ringo (we were SPCs in the 82d ath the same time)

If you join "Books" the reading list will pop up as folks add to it. I try to add a "RP Book Club: X" about once a week. Usually it has "some" military theme or connection, even if very loose.

I found the whole series at the local library. Great show. Couldn't get into the books. My son loved them.
