"I will instill pride in all I train, Pride in self, in the Army, and in country." - Drill Sergeant creed.

How do we get back the sense of pride of being a Soldier? The pride of wearing that U.S. Army name-tape? And of course, the pride of being an American.

Are we as Leaders failing them or is society to blame?

We got pride, black pride, gay pride, bronie pride, furry pride. We got lots of pride. What we lack is respect. Respect for self and respect for others.
As for who is to blame, plenty of that to go around. It starts with the society and cultures we recruit from and it's built into the developing entitlement culture of the military hierarchy. We don't take responsibility and we don't give respect.

That lack of respect isn't just self, its from main stream toward non mainstream people also, our country has a total lack of respect for those that do not fit the normal social standing and thats a sad thing considering our country at one time would boast about being a melting pot of people and those people are what made it great.

Leaders (at all levels) instill pride. People are proud to follow good leaders... Proud to be a part of something bigger - if it has leadership people believe in.

Leaders set the example of what others emulate.

Most of all, people are proud of RESULTS. Those that produce the positive results that promote proud followers will find themselves in command of a proud bunch - proud of their collective results.

SSG,
You are right about the lack of pride in today's Army. I think that the lack of pride comes from a lack of education on the heroes of the past. The problem is also the solution though. I think that proper education on the our heritage and past would help to instill more pride at all levels. Learning about guys like MAJ Dick Winters, MAJ Audie Murphy ect. Should be emphasized more. This could probably also be applied towards civilian education, but there one would have to go seek it out. Learning our past would make people understand the previous sacrifices for our country and the uniform we wear. I know that this type of education has worked for me.

SPC Gonzalez you hit a great talking point for this trend! Today in the Not in my Squad Workshop that I participated in D.C. with SMA Dailey it was stated that one of the major issues contributing to a lack of pride in the unit's climate is the fact that Soldiers are not being taught about the Army history and the traditions thereof. Soldiers are missing the mark and are beginning to identify the Army as a 9 to 5 job and not a lifestyle. It was agreed to go back to the basics and emphasize these traditions in Basic Training and in all the units around the world.
