Time and time again have we aligned ourselves with middle eastern tribal, ethnic, and geopolitical entities to try and accomplish our regional goals, take the mujahadeen for example. Seldom do these plans go well, but there is talk of creating a lasting friendship with the semi nomadic and fiercely prideful Kurds, under the common banner of defeating Isis. Do you think this could be a middle eastern success story, or just another fluke?

Not to rain on the parade, but has the U S ever gained any lasting allies? This current Afghanistan/Iraqi "coalition" BS is BS, the "coalition" only lasts as long as the U S DOLLARS fund it! Unless they parlay any U S support into a real economy for their country they all fall by the wayside!

The US desires a working relationship with Turkey. There is a large minority of Kurds living there who want a separate nation for themselves. The Kurds there are not trusted because they are seen as a disloyal group that would team up with Kurds in other parts of the Middle east.

PO2 Robert Cuminale... I noticed your comment on how the Kurds are not trusted because they are seen as a disloyal group who would team up with Kurds in other parts of the middle east... Well. You are dead on the money, there. AND SERIOUSLY, CAN YOU REALLY BLAME THEM?? They are one, large, ethnic/tribal group. They have been torn apart for centuries. They have ALWAYS thought of the lands they lived in as Kurdistan. After WWI was settled and done, the Kurds were supposed to be given land of their own, a country of their own... This was all done via treaty... but due to the reconquest of the area by Ataturk, (the Turkish ruler) while the treaty was being written up, the settled-on treaty was tossed out, they were thrown to the wolves, and Kurdistan was divided up between Turkey, Syria and Iraq. So, you can see why these people want their own country! Imagine if someone drew an imaginary line thru your yard. The kids playing on the swingset in the back yard belong to one country, the Wife and other kids making dinner in the kitchen belong to another country, and you and your son - working on the car in the driveway, well you belong to a third country. Now you can never be together again, and no one cares, and they won't listen to you, anyway. Others have mentioned that the Kurds are not Turkish, nor are they Syrian or Iraqi. And that is TRUE. To them, those are just lines on a map. The real truth is they are OWN PEOPLE. So, yes. They will fight. But yes, they also have an "ulterior motive", which is that they want to reunite their people into one nation.

All a legacy of the French and British who divided Arabia into nations depending on what tribe would promise the most oil. A fault of the Americans as well since they didn't participate. As I noted earlier the US desires a relationship with the Turks as do the EU nations. If they have to dump the Kurds for it no one doubts that they will.

Only as long as it's mutually beneficial. Unfortunately the US track record has been to file the divorce papers first.
