I commissioned April of last year, was placed on IRR status until I got picked up by a unit in February this year, and so far I've done two drill weekends and went on orders for four days of training in a different state. Another LT who's been around for a few years told me that simply by joining at this time I was eligible for a number of awards, including the National Defense Service Medal, the GWOT Service Medal, and the Army Service Medal. I have refrained from pinning these on because I'm a little doubtful about my eligibility. I looked up AR 600-8-22 (pgs 24, 31, and 65 pertain to these three medals), and I at least do not seem to be eligible for the third of these, as I have not yet attended BOLC. Might I be eligible for the other two, given the information I've provided? Are there others I might be eligible for at this stage? Obviously some of them will come in time, but some folks are urging me to make my ASUs more colorful.

Short answer is if it’s not in your records under awards you can’t wear it.

You would get some of those awards if you were full time active duty. Being in the reserves we do not get those automatic participation awards others get in full time. If you read the fine print on each award on the HRC website it will list the exact requirements for each award.

Just for reference I was a direct commission as an O-3 in the reserves. I’ve been in almost 2 years. Attended DCC and multiple drills. Attending BOLC shortly. I have 0 awards and unless I mobilize or deploy for 30+ consecutive days active duty (not schools or AT) then I won’t have any of those awards.

LT, check SFC Rapach's post, specifically the link to the G1 awards page. People can urge you all they want. Until you earn an award, through service or achievement, wear what you are specifically authorized. Wear nothing that is not specifically annotated in your OMPF. Service awards appear for the most part on your ORB. The certificate of achievement type awards go in your OMPF and are on your ORB....and all match your DA Photo. The GWOTSM is now tied to a specific operation or period of service. Do a little research and get your stuff straight at the BN S1.

Until OIF in 2003, I had 3 ARCOMs, 2 AAMs, NDSM, ASR, and an OSR. I had commanded a Company and was on my third duty assignment. When I  arrived at my first unit after OBC in 1994, I had the NDSM and an ASR. Contrary to what people say, they do not give this stuff away. Decorations will come in good time.
