Is there anyway to influence your assignment after transportation BOLC or put in for a nominative assignment like WHCA, White House trans, or the old guard. Or is it all needs of the army?

Your input is the dream sheet at the start of your MS IV year which has assignment preference. It will ultimately be needs of the Army. You are pipelined to BOLC and your first assignment based on anticipated needs.your dream sheet will inform branch which need is more desirable, or just say F it and send you somewhere else.
If you are a brand new LT, you need to get to a line unit and learn your craft as a PL. nom jobs will come later. WHCA etc are not on the board at that point. U derstand you have prior service but you will be learning another whole side of the Army.
Your second assignment will likely be via marketplace. More choice involved there, but you can only choose based on needs that are in need of fill. There are some Duty positions that go unfilled based on prioritization by HRC. So a vacancy doesn't always equal fillable assignment.

There seems to be a trend to put new LT's in assistant staff positions or filling in the addition duty for Officers slots, then give them a Platoon later. Don't know if that is really true, but I hear it from a lot of Engineer LT's it seems.
I feel lucky, I lead three different Platoons in two different Branches and didn't pull a single Staff assignment until after my Company Command time. Oddly enough, maybe the majority of the stuff I answer here I either know or know where to find from my S-1 days and it wasn't an assignment that particularly liked.
