How does PTSD effect your relationship with your friends, family and Spouse? More importantly how do you react to those times when you are feeling your worst and have to find a way to get thru it?
This is something that I have been struggling with the past few years, I don't know if my PTSD is related to my deployment or if it is from the things that I have seen in the Fire Service. But it is there and at times hard to control.

Glad to see that y'all are working thru the issues at hand... At times it gets to the point that I just want to go away for a while and seek to conquer my demons on my own time

I thank God daily for my family and their strength. They had stuck through with me during the worst of times and we have learned to live together in such ways that reduce my impact on them when stuff gets bad. Friends on the other hand, I have lost my fair share of, mainly because they are civilians and dont understand. I am lucky though and have a very strong support system with a few close veteran friends, other veteran famly members and a supportive wife. As far as how I deal with it....for one I have an awesome dog who keeps me grounded for the most part, I listen to my body and intervene with effective coping skills often and when that dont work I have a few safe places I can go that give me time to come back. None of that works perfectly everytime, but it has helped lessen thr impact on my wife and kids and has helped bring us all closer over time.

My wife is the only person that can help me with what i go through. I have buddies i talk to for some things, but like "Anger wise" only my wife can talk me down. Great question!

I am still struggling with a way to explain to my Wife why after 5 years Laser Pointers pointed at me still set me off, or loud noises behind me make me jump... Most days I am able to control it but some days you just want to retreat into your shell and be left alone.
I find that I am more irritable then I used to be, and the little things that I used to be able to let go just stick with me now.

MSG Brad Sand I have gone down that road before. It has helped in many ways but there is only so much i can take from a Civilian that has never worn a uniform or risked their life the way many of us have. They do help, but not for everything. The stigma of PTSD is dead, finally, but the effects last for a long time!

SFC Joseph James Is the stigma truly dead or is there still that one thing that is held over a soldiers head after they have sought help for it.

Brother, I'm tracking. And with it being Throat Punch Thursday, we have added pressure BUT there are some civilians that 'get it' and there are some brothers and sisters from the service in this profession too. Your tough, got it. Your a great soldier and leader, with you. Keep looking for the person who is right, for you, to treat your wounds. You are too important to your family, our Army and our Nation to be laying this all at your wife's and your own feet.
