When going green to gold how do you figure out what commissioned job you will have?

You will be compeating for your branch against other cadets. The most important part as a cadet is on your Junior year (MS3). You will be constantly evaluated on your performance (like "garrison" and "tactical"), PT test and military clases. Seeing you are an 11B you should not have any problem, but don't be overconfident. On summer of your MS3 year you will go to an evaluation which I believe its at Fort Knox. Back when I went it was at Fort Lewis and "Advance Camp" was called LDAC. I believe the name was changed but for the sake of this explanation lets leave it as LDAC. At LDAC you will be evaluated in different positions (Cadet BN CDR, Cadet PL, Cadet PSG, Cadet SL, etc) in "garrison" and "tactical" (Squad STX, PL STX). You will also do day and night land nav. Please don't fail land nav, I saw some of my peers get affected by failing land nav. I don't know if as of recently the criteria for land nav changed on how it affects your overall evaluation. After you come back from LDAC, you will be a senior cadet (MS4). When you are on your senior year (MS4) your packet will go to Fort Knox. This packet will have all your evaluations as a cadet in the school house and the evaluation at LDAC. This includes Your GPA (which has the greatest weight by itself), APFT score at LDAC, your evaluations at LDAC and at the school house. Some bonus points are if you do sports, are a member of an association, help around the community, and other extracurricular activities. You then rank your job preference, duty location preferance then your packet is sent with all your evaluations. Then all cadets in the ROTC program across the nation will be ranked. Infantry and MI are the most sought jobs. Quartermaster and Transportation are the least. At least that is how it was on my days, but peoples job preferances change overtime. Things that can help get the job your want is adding an ADSO of X years (for mine I submitted an extra 3 years ADSO), your degree (at least for Signal if you had an IT degree and put the Signal branch first and were top 50%, you would get said branch at least that is how it was in my day and how I got Signal), or you could do branch detail, meaning if you want MI but are unsure you will get it you would go to armor for example and later on go to MI Captain Career Course to be an MI officer. That being said this will increase your chances of getting your desired branch, not a guarantee though.

Around december of your MS4 year you will get your job. And as a G2G you will definitely go active. Other cadets that are not G2G or through one of the paid programs by the Army (like the one for med school), would have to not only compete for their branch preference but also to go active or reserve. And once you get your job you will also get your adso and branch detail (if you put branch detail). After that if you did not get the job of preference you can still change, but that is through the VTIP program.

The VTIP program is based mostly on two things, your evaluation as an officer and your year group. If you go this route keep in mind to get as many top blocks as possible AND if for that quarter your branch is letting the officers in your year group move. There is a list that comes out with "in", "out" and I believe the third was "closed". If you see that your branch says "out" and the branch that you want to go to says "in", that means you can get out of your branch and go into the branch of your preference. If not you will have to wait until the next quarter. This list comes out every quarter. You can only VTIP once you are a 1LT promotable.
