Lived in the Tidewater, VA, area many years ago. Went TDY to Ft Eustis several times in the 2007-2013 timeframe. In 2013, the Army Transportation Center, Museum, and School were there. Also Army watercraft operation. One of the SDDC Brigades was headquartered there in 2013 and may still be there. Also I think part or all of Training and Doctrine Command is there. In addition the Norfolk area is home to many military units and headquarters. Naval Air Stations Norfolk and Oceania are in the area. Also there's a headquarters facility in Suffolk. Langley AFB, near Hampton, VA, hosts Headquarters Air Combat Command and a fighter wing.

Tidewater area is full of history and industry. Yorktown is near Ft Eustis, as are Jamestown, Williamsburg and the College of William and Mary. Newport News and Norfolk shipyards are major employers in addition to DoD. Coast Guard has a station at Yorktown. There's a Gen Douglas McArthur museum in Norfolk and a maritime museum in Newport News. A battle ship in near the MacArthur museum.

Recreation, sports, and entertainment opportunities are good. Beaches on the Atlantic are available at Fort Monroe and at Virginia Beach (south of Norfolk). Boating and fishing in the rivers and ocean for those who enjoy it. I think professional hockey and basketball are played at the arena in Newport News. Arena in Newport News and Norfolk host musical entertainment.
