I'm in the process of completing a Defense Attaché
packet. Is anyone aware of the process to include: length of time before
decision is made; choice of duty assignment; family life; potential jobs for
spouse; schools for children and most importantly, civilian jobs after
retirement?

SFC Walcott, Drill Sergeant duties can be very rewarding and enjoyable as well and I am sure you will still have time for Defense Attaché duties if you want to try again after the trail. I was a drill sergeant for 3 years at Fort Benning, GA. If you have any questions about DS duties, day to day life ect, feel free to ask. For sure I am not a SME for 2014 but I left DS duties in 2009 so I think I might still remember one or two things that still apply in 2014.

MSG Davis, I'm in the process of applying now. THe attaché branch says I have a good chance; my packet should be complete next week.
Can you answer some questions about how they choose assignments and stuff like that? Do you know if it's completely random or if they direct you toward certain assignments based on certain criteria?
I sent you a "Connect" request. Thanks for your help.

SSG W,
I always thought about doing that during my career, but never got the chance, I think it would be a very unique and challenging duty, but I also believe it would be beneficial and rewarding as well, especially within the civilian sector after departure from the military. I wish you luck in your pursuit and hope it is an enjoyable experience if you are selected for the position.
