My husband retired and is enrolled in college. Will he receive compensation from VA?

We heard that if he is enrolled in college ( he s using the GI bill) as a full time student ( he also got 100 percent disability from VA) he will receive BAH from the VA. Is this true ?

You have to apply for and draw the post 9-11 GI Bill benefits. https://www.benefits.va.gov/gibill/post911_gibill.asp
Your husband had to be briefed on this as part of his outprocessing from the post at the Ed Center.
100% VA Disability rating doesn't have anything to do with this education benefit.
As a SSG How are you counseling your soldiers on the use of their Gi Bill? This is a pretty elementary aspect of the program.

Alice San - it is because you selected a service member option in the profile. You need to go back to your profile and select family member. Right now, your profile appears as an unverified service member. It matters how people Formulate responses.

Yes and no. He will get BAH from the VA, but through the Post 9-11. This program is run through the VA. He will not get additional BAH from the VA for being 100%.

TSgt David Holman ikay so is it going to happen in automatic or does he have to specifically request BAH to VA? The first two classes he is going to take as a full time student start in March

Alice San If he starts full time in March, he should see the first BAH payment in April (or May if he starts later in the month). The payment should be automatic, but it will be direct deposit, so he needs to make sure his bank info is up to date with VA. If he is 100% then I assume he is already getting disability payments and this is squared away, but I hate to assume...

SFC Casey O'Mally thanks for the info. He ll see the first check for his disability in March. In regards, to post 9 11 and the BAH...assuming it is true he ll get the first check in April or even March, do you if he ll get back pay?

Alice San yes... And no. It is always paid a month behind (just like a paycheck). His April payment will be for whatever he is entitled to for March. If he has to wait for May because it took time to process and/or he started later in the month, then May's payment will be for March and April. So in that sense, yes he will get back pay.
But if he has been going to school all along and has not applied for his GI Bill benefits, he cannot apply now and get paid for the schooling he had previously completed. So in that sense, no, there will be no back pay. Pay and benefits start from the academic period (semesyer/trimester/quarter/etc.) For which benefits were first applied for (and qualified for).

He is authorized many benefits. However, he needs to contact the VA. Their are separate rules for the VA benefit and what he earned I. The military.
