What do I need to know as 31A PCS-ing to Camp Casey?

1LT (Join to see) - the Senior MP officer is usually dual hatted as the provost martial who works closely with the Garrison Commander and Senior Commander (who is considered the installation commander, designated in AR600-20) on maintaining law and order. Occasionally the mission will be large enough where there is a PM independently designated. Had that happen at Camp Humphreys, at the time we had one MP Company there. With all the realignment in USFK over the last 10 years can't tell you what any of it looks like.

As you know the MP units have different missions, law enforcement on the installation is only one of them. There will be a churn of LE support and your unit's training in battlefield traffic control, area security, etc. the LE piece in Korea is interesting. Down range Saturday night, policy up Joes from off limits places, curfew violations, lots of drunk and disorderly.

That's a great point, Sir. I've started to learn some Korean and I've been getting a lot of cultural insight from family that currently lives on Namwon. Are there any resources you've found particularly helpful?

1LT (Join to see) - I have some points below. Although my tour was way back during 2004-2005, these should still be helpful...

1. Learn public transit system around Korea. Taxis can be expensive and unsure if Uber/Lyft work there
2. Be careful of time management. Troops in Korea are subject to curfew and getting caught can mean GOMOR. It happens not only to junior enlisted, but NCOs and officers too
3. Have money and a plan for maintaining a prepaid Korean cell phone. US phones may not work or may require SIM card change. As a platoon leader, you need your phone to be available at all times
4. Go on MWR trips or have a KATUSA accompany you for culture when available. Although there are small villages outside of major bases, there are multiple opportunities to explore. MWR or a KATUSA guide tend to have familiarity since you are overseas
5. Bring computer with you. Most US bases have paid internet access and e-mail is a way to maintain communications stateside. US bases have American voltage standards.
6. Shopping. There are multiple small places to shop along with ultra luxurious shopping malls in Seoul. If you want American goods from Amazon, APO mail can get it to you in a few weeks. Otherwise, go with a group to Coex mall or other places if you like browsing
7. Be aware of dating life. Rough to mention, but some fellow junior officers may attempt to flirt or aggressively ask you out on a date since you are a young American female. While most are harmless, be ready to accept or politely turn down multiple offers.
