I’ve just been offered an AGR position for 36B (which is my current MOS) and my first duty station would be Fort McCoy, WI. I haven’t made a decision yet but I’m leaning towards going. Any thoughts?

I’m there now. I work with 36B AGRs. It’s AC/RC combined up here. It’s very rural and cold in the winter but I’ve enjoyed my three years here.

Much appreciated Chief! I’m in the process of being stationed there. I’ll probably work with you as well when I get there.

I was stationed there several years ago and loved it. We lived in base housing in Tomah so it was a short drive to work. I know there were working on building more housing on South Post but not sure where they are with that. There is not a lot to do on the base but it can get quite busy during training season. Winters can be extremely cold but summers are beautiful. Tomah and Sparta are the two nearest towns with populations around 8,000 each. It was a good assignment for my family and me.

That sounds amazing. Thanks MSG. I’m on the clock now. I’m getting my packet together as we speak so I can submit it and receive the official job offer.

I was there in 85-87 time frame. No housing except for sub-standard, no commissary - had to go to Lacrosse to get to a sizeable grocery store, small PX. And, unless you skied or hunted deer nothing to do in the winter time which lasted about 9 months of the year (or so it seemed). But, if the ARRTC is not there anymore the political climate has to be better.

Tomah and Sparta both have Wal-Marts and many new stores so you can get more of your basic shopping done. We went to Lacrosse for the larger stores and malls. As for the winter, I played and coached hockey so that took up my winter months with traveling around the state for games and tournaments. I'm not sure what it's like there now that the ARRTC moved to Fort Knox. The 88th RSC moved in just over I left.

It the best place for training for Reserve and Guard. There is Diamond Saber 36B training annually there. Next best thing to Ft Jackson for active duty training bases.
