I am getting married to a girl who is going to college and I don't know if I'll be placed near her for my first duty station. Is there any way I can get it changed to be closer to her or change it after a year? She is very dedicated to this college and I dont want her to have to move from it since the program she is in is amazing. I am a 13 bravo going into basic training and would like to know how to do this prior. I am going to fort sill for basic and ait, she lives 5 hours away from fort sill over in northern Arkansas. Is there a good chance i can get placed at sill of i request it? Please let me know if you have any tips, thank you

Not to be a dick, but maybe the marriage needs to go into a holding pattern. You are gonna be pretty damn busy over the next couple years as will your girlfriend/fiance. Chances are you are going to be geographically separated. I've seen this movie before and I know how it ends.

If you're worried about being separated from you honey while in CONUS, what are you going to do if/when you're deployed?

I recommend you continue with your enlistment contract and wait until you complete AIT to ask for a particular assignment. It is very hard for young married enlisted to make ends meets. Your wife needs to complete her education goals. Just keep in mind that military wifes have a very hard job and serve too. Be the best Soldier you can be and do everything possible to accumalate rank.

They do serve but with an oath of marriage. They support their spouses during multiple reassignments (some overseas), deployments and while their Soldiers are away for schools and training events. It is a difficult job being married to a Soldier. I am not going to waste my time explaining to you why it is not horse shit. Your comments are not worth intelligent thoiught.

PO2 Mike Shorey - what an ass response ! my ex
(many years after i got out) had to suffer me away at school 4 months after 3 months on parris island , then less than 3 yrs later , alone a full yr while i was on okinawa ! ,,30 min phone call fri nights , i had to wait in line 3 hrs for sometimes ! , thank goodness , i can text or skype my son almost everyday on oki ! :) ,i wish we had this when i was there ! they don't 'serve' the way we do , they endure and persevere, probably in ways we never know about,,, i do believe , what she went through while i was in, took a toll,,, and never got over it after i got out ,, :(
actually, if you are married , this response makes it sound as if you don't care for her, or any number of wrong things !

PO2 Mike Shorey - Military spouses serve in many ways. Who do you think runs Army Community Services on overseas installations (and many stateside posts)? No, they don't deploy to combat zones, but they keep things stable back home while you're away.

SPC Chris Benson - You are a dick! I had a GED before NCO Academy & some colledge before going back in after a break in service. I could give a rat's ass what you think & I was a member of Delta from 79-91, I went through Selection in the fall of 1978. check it out. I have nothing to prove to you and I am verified. Now go play a video war game kid!

You can request staying at Fort Sill, but there's no guarantee that you will get it. The Army assigns based on mission and need, not soldier desires based on future spousal relationships and schooling preferences. The greatest need will be at the larger installations like Forts Hood, Bragg, Campbell, Stewart, Lewis, Carson, etc. And, they almost certainly will not move you after a year. My recommendation would be to submit the request and plan for it not to be honored. Then, let her stay at that school until she graduates, and connect back up after her graduation.
