It's actually less complicated than that. The origin of the salute actually comes from this. One Soldier was approaching another in direct sunlight. The Soldier couldn't see who it was and put his hand up as a visor to guard from the sun. He could then see the other Soldier's name tag who happened to out rank him and said "Oh hello sir!" The sir was in turn blinded by the sunlight reflecting off the flash of the other Soldier's beret and could not see who was addressing him. He then puts up his hand to guard from the reflection and saw who it was and said "hey whats up?" A 2nd Lt saw this exchange from afar and thought it was standard protocol. He couldn't find it in writing anywhere so for his first OER he needed a bullet and decided to write a AR on it. That is the origination of the salute.
