Are there any Chinese linguists (Mandarin) on RP? If so, would you be willing to recommend beginning Mandarin materials to a Russian linguist? I have lots of books but none of them live up to their Amazon ratings, and would appreciate some advice. I am studying this by my lonesome due to lack of instruction where I live.

While I'm not a Chinese linguist, I do appreciate the languages of the world. I recommend using the Rosetta Stone programs. I have both the Spanish and Arabic versions and working on purchasing a couple others in the future.

Andrea, I just stumbled onto this thread. I'm a Chinese Linguist, and agree, if you are going at it alone, Rosetta Stone will give you a great foundation. You already know you have the aptitude to learn another language.
What you need to be careful is learning the wrong pronunciation, which is easy to do if you are reading the phonetic Chinese. I met a civilian while traveling through China. He was on level 3 of Rosetta Stone and was not far behind my skills. I did scan through his RS software and found it user friendly. It is self paced and you can limit your learning to whatever aspect of the language you want to focus on; Listening, Speaking, Reading.
One thing I liked about Chinese (over Russian) was no conjugating verbs.
If you have any questions feel free to message me.
