I am a fan that promotions and rewards are not so much for what you have done, but for what you are expected to do....It's always been a Sgt. Major pet peeve of mine that our intense competitions for "Of the Year" honors rarely result in active involvement of the person, just a lot of rewards and recognition. Then they are largely forgotten throughout the year. What specific things should we expect the Soldier of the XXXX (Recruiter, Drill Sgt and so on) to do during their "year"? Where/How have you seen it handled well?

Back in the day, i was Soldier of the Year in '92, and NCO of the Year in '93. I really didn't think much of it -- the career acceleration was enough. Some of my competitors thought otherwise (eg, they should have special rooms, etc) Personally, I think the potential for recognition and career acceleration should be enough, especially in this day and age.

1SG Blount. I respect your opinion.  I just think that if we pick you at the best, we should expect better from you, and provide better opportunities.  We are not very good in advancing the right people for the right reasons by giving them greater responsibility/upward mobility.  We give them a plaque, a set of blues, a parking spot.

SGM (Join to see) I have no problem with the recognition. It's buying them a new hat size that I object to.

I feel that it gives Leaders another tool to assess their Soldiers. For me I was more willing to recommend a Soldier who competed in the SOTM, Quarter or Year competition rather than one who didn't because I saw the effort put into studying for the board and now I know they have the book knowledge necessary now they just need to continue to improve their leadership which is something each leader does.

I never made Sailor of the Year, but I made Sailor of the Quarter at nearly every command I served at. It did give me a goal to be as professional a Sailor as I could be, which in turn when receiving this award, hopefully my peers and juniors, were motivated to win this award also, because the award also helped with promotion points.

Pretty much always knew what was expected of me, that's a given, but then to my thinking most times in order to do a good job, you still have to go above and beyond or that extra mile to know within yourself that you have done a job to be proud of!
