How can the RP salute feature be improved? Do you like it? Why? Why not?

Member salute
Love the idea, but a few thoughts..
Its nice to see a member "salute" you,,,but it leaves me wondering....WHY?
Was it something I said to them? Another member? Something I offered or did?
When we endorse a member, we say why....
The salute "button" is on the members profile page and when you select it, there currently is no option for a user note..could that be added?
Would you like that?
Perhaps, Select the salute button and a pop up opens "Would you like to add a note for this user?"
With a "Send It" button under the text box..allowing the member to send it with or without a note.
Perhaps its just me, I do appreciate that a member took a moment to go to my profile page and click Salute.. But assuming this feature was added to allow a member to be recognized and thus continue "That " behavior ..Would it not make sense to allow the saluting member the ability to tell the saluted member what the behavior was?
So thats me, I like the feature and I have a single suggestion for the staff.
What about you?

It would be nice IF you did not have to be a contact to the individual. That puts a damper on the whole thing. Why should you only be allowed to salute just your contacts, I think that actually diminishes it as an accolade. What can be better than receiving a salute or accolade from someone you do not know?

SFC Greg Bruorton - See below the justification for the decision to require the salute being a contact

SGM Erik Marquez , I don’t see the discussion!
Regardless, I should be able to salute someone regardless fleas if I know them. It shows respect!

I too like the salute feature, and I have been using it when a person does or says something that I personally thought it says "YES! that is great!", or what you did was "Above and beyond", or the reason goes above and beyond just a thumbs up. So yes, I agree that a personal message is a way to go and do away with the contact requirement.

Ahhh, one additional suggestion SSG Carlos Madden .... add a "Salute" button to the initial pop up we get when you hover over a members name

SSG Carlos Madden - What can i say....
Something about even a blind pig finds a truffle occasionally
Or
even a broken clock is right twice a day (once if it s a 24 hr clock)
