My nephew is fresh out of high school/Basic & is stationed at Fort Drum, New York. His ride back told him AFTER he got here he had changed his travel plans. Should I drive the 33 hour round trip to take him back or try and help him get a flight? The cheapest is over $425 and it is a 2 to 4 hour drive to the airport as well depending on if he leaves from Memphis or Atlanta. Suggestions/thoughts?

Is he worth that kind of investment to you? Are there other options, the bus perhaps? I don't know where you are, so I guessed something like Montgomery, AL to Watertown on Greyhound and it's $155, less with a veterans or military discount. He'll be on for 31 hours, but it saves you the drive.

SPC James Seigars - Well, an hour is better than two or more to the airport, and Tupelo to Watertown is the same price (although it takes longer).

SPC James Seigars - Fort Drum is about four miles from downtown Watertown. If one of his battle buddies can't pick him up, or if his unit doesn't run a shuttle down town, it shouldn't be an expensive taxi ride. Most units have a van the staff duty uses to pick up people who need rides, mostly drunks, but also soldiers coming in on the bus. At least all the units I was in did.

Red Cross helped me and my rider when my clutch blew out 200 miles from the base on Sunday. The RC's rep in Utica, NY had a husband who was a retired Marine. He personally shelled out the money for our bus tickets, but told us to pay the RC. One bill I had no intention of ducking.

Get him to Harrisburg Pa and I'll meet you there and take him the rest of the way.

I vote for bus, or maybe train. Which would be more direct?
