I watched the game and heard the announcers say they thought a couple players playing could go in the draft. Were they just saying they were good enough or is there a way they could be drafted and play professionally?

There was a policy change a few years ago that allowed athletes from the service academies to enter the draft and request a reserve commission and serve their obligation that way. The policy was rescinded in May of this year.

Why not let them serve in the reserves and maybe some active service after their football career is over. The Navy and the Army used these guys to win games just like any other university. Why not let them get something out of it. My attitude back when I was still active duty was completely 180. I guess I became a little soft after being a civilian again.

I remember Napoleon McCallum (sp?). I read a story where he was stationed on a boat of some sort in San Diego Harbor I believe. Served and played football.

Different sport, but remember David Robinson was a Naval Academy graduate. That's how he got the nickname "The Admiral." He received a Reserve commission after graduating which incurred only a 2 year active duty obligation, then went on to be one of the greatest centers in the history of the NBA.

I think the Navy was happy to let him go. For all the positive PR it generated, plus he grew like 4 feet at the Academy and they had to special order all his uniforms from a place on the moon.

Oh absolutely. They loved the PR. But I don't think it was quite 4 feet of growth. He actually got a waiver for admittance because at 6'8" he was two inches above the height limit. By the time he played his first game he was 6'9" and he topped out at 7'1". Close though. :)
