Command Sergeants Major (CSM) Program was established in July 1967 with the first 192 selectees in December 1967. And five of them would ultimately serve in the newly established position of Sergeant Major of the Army

One of those CSM's served as the SMA as a CSM (the only one to do so) until a specific rank denoting the SMA was developed. However, when someone is selected for the SMA position, they are appointed by to SGM to take the SMA position. Neat fact.

In 1967 I was promoted to E7. At that I had never seen it heard of a sergeant major E9. I deployed to Vietnam in 1968 and upon return in 1969 believe I saw my first sergeant major. As a retired SMG myself, I still don’t know when the grade of E9 was established.

SGM Omer Dalton - 1957, as I recall. When I came in there were many NCOs left from the 7 Grade system. That why you had the rank and pay grade together, as in MSGE7 and MSGE8. Buck SGT was reinstated at E5 and SSG became SSGE6, with a SSGE5 being the old timers. BTW, you are not the first SubMachine Gun (SMG) that I've seen. LOL.

It was 1964/65 when I saw the last of these old timers during the my early years in the Army. My father-in-law was a SSG E5.MAJ Ronnie Reams
