Is the level 3 fleece jacket for garrison or field wear?

I've worn the fleece during cold weather for years in garrison, never in the field. And I've seen others do this as well. Yesterday, an NCO told me to take it off, that I should wear level 2s instead, and that he has never worn the fleece in garrison. This wasn't in formation or anything, it was just for walking to and from my car and a classroom. Is the fleece authorized for garrison wear?

Yes, you can wear the fleece in garrison, as outer garment... Well, let me elaborate... generally that is governed by local policy if not covered in 670-1... Why would it have name, US Army, and rank on it?

There you go applying that common sense thing Sir. You know that's not allowed in the Army....

COL Charles Williams I'm now being told that it is 82nd ABN policy to wear it only when and if the CSM specifically puts it out, and then to wear those tapes underneath the ACU top.
All this makes Army sense...which is no sense.

Sometimes, we commanders do silly things with regards to local rules, or supplements to rules. I have seen many odd things!!!!

I've always heard the opposite, in that the fleece was for garrison wear only. For whatever reason a lot of CSMs and 1SGs dislike the fleece and end up making their own arbitrary policies. If the Commander signs off on it there's not a lot you can do. You also may have to pick your battles. Getting into an argument with a SFC over a garment probably isn't going to end well even if you're right.

As a retired CSM I like the fleece Ok for garrison wear and have also worn it will in the field. I personally didn't care for it as wear in the field simply because it doesn't hold heat in very well.
