After watching the credits roll in Saving Private Ryan and departing an empty 900 seat Senator Theatre in Baltimore, saw an elderly gentlemen sitting Center backrow with a death grip on the chair arm to his left and right, staring straight ahead, tears streaming down his cheeks. 29th ID Omaha Beach, H-Hour 6/6/44. The ultimate testimonial. Twenty Nine Let's Go! He did and even over a half century later, still was. God Bless him and those he carries in his heart.

Now about "WE WERE SOLDIERS ONCE AND YOUNG?" Although I was in the Navy, I wish that more officers were as concerned about their men as Col. Moore. And Galloway who showed the truth about Nam, the only Journalist during Nam. The others were followers of Gen. Westmoreland. Need I say more?

One of my sergeants took his dad (of the 29th) to see it when it came out. Sergeant said he would never talk about it. After the movie he was crying and spilled it all.

My Great Uncle was a tank commander at Normandy and I was able to sit and learn from him for a day in High School. Having had that day and seen SPR, I can say it was almost exactly what he described, just he was in a tank, not on foot. I don't know if he'd have been able to watch the movie or not, as we lost him a year or so before it's release, but I know it hit me hard watching the opening, knowing he was there and having heard about it from him.

Went to see the movie when it first came out. Were a number of vets, most with their wives, in the theater (based on the campaign ribbons on their covers). One of them, seated behind me, exclaimed "Oh my God, they had a camera there!" during the opening scenes, and then he started to cry.

The movie Jarhead in my opinion. While most military themed movies focus on the glory and battles, Jarhead focuses on the actual military experience. Between the little games that you play with the DIs, selling your duty to other Marines, getting drunk and doing stupid crap, finding out about your cheating spouses, Dear John letters, being briefed on what you can and can not say to the public, even the frustration of training for so long to pull the trigger and never getting the opportunity to.
It's a funny and sad movie when you think about how accurate it is.

I disagree. Marine Corps veteran, active duty from 90-2012. An 8541 during that time period, with tours in the gulf, Somalia, Bangladesh, PI, Kosovo etc, etc. the authenticity of Jarhead is crap. Full Metal Jacket is a thousand times better. For a Marine to say Jarhead is an accurate depiction of being a Marine Sniper in the Gulf is crap. If I wanted someone to understand what it was like or is like, both the book and movie are not in the top ten. Swoff was a disaffected junior Marine who was so convinced of his own moral and mental superiority he failed to actually learn anything but the ability to parrot better men’s experiences. Few Memoirs disgust me more. Generation kill is good. Full metal jacket is great. Siege of fire base Gloria, Blackhawk down. All are far better in my opinion.

Capt Karlos Nordinsifeller - Congratulations for being the one millionth person to not read my post. But go ahead and fell free to give a worthless opinion on something I NEVER SAID.

First, learn to count. Second, “feel free” not “fell free”. Third, my opinion about how Jarhead is a shitfeast of a film has little to do with you aside from the fact that we disagree on the films value, or lack of it, to the war film genre. What I’m saying is- I was stating my opinion on the film, not of your opinion, nor of you. Let me know when the other 999,000 + responses that just don’t get YOU come in :)

Oh- and I forgot how sad so many Marines are “because they didn’t get to pull the trigger”. Yeah, real let down.
