With the current decision by the Navy to do away with rating within their ranks, to be more in line with other service ranks, is this just another example of political correctness getting out of control throughout the military?

Political correctness has very little to do with actual politics. For an easy formula:

Politics: purpose is to help your own interests

Politically correct: not being an *sshole

I'm going to make a motivational sign with that.

SGT Efaw (Mick) G. - Germany has is down? Germany just tried to prosecute someone for 'offending a foreign head of state', Turkish President if I remember correctly. What do you think our founding fathers might have said about that? Freedom of speech is all about saying or printing things many other people may not like. Our universities are no longer places where people can discuss things from different viewpoints without the PC police stepping in. I am also against people being offensive, but what do you learn if you never hear what other people have to say? I would rather I hear things that may offend me, and have my right jealously protected.

All this arguing. I leave you gentlemen with this: respect each other, don't concern yourself so much with what other people do. Life is just a giant social experiment, and I'm just here for the free cookies at the end.

Politics has no place in the military, all that matters is that we follow the legal orders of those who have the constitutional authority to issue those orders.

I'm not sure why you equate "political correctness" with politics. What is Political Correctness, other than treating people with the same level of respect and courtesy that you want and expect? If we are all going to work together as a team, it is imperative that we are respectful and courteous to those who are different.

Some people are going to struggle with that, their fear/hatred of people who are different is a real problem... likewise there are those who try to take "political correctness" too far and believe preferential treatment for some minorities is necessary. Railing against political correctness, does nothing to resolve or mitigate either of those issues.

One thing that generates more backlash against PC is the arrogant way PC types have decided that everyone else that disagrees with them hates or fears people. That in itself is a more obvious expression of hate or fear. They fear a world where their every feeling, opinion, or idea won't be endorsed be rational people, so they label people that disagree with them. They also typically refer to their ideas as 'common sense' and others ideas as hate or ignorance.

Your going to need to give me an example of what you mean. If you say that purple people are lazy or that people who believe in X religion are fools who shouldn't be entrusted with responsibility... then your statement is evidence that you are hating/fearing people, and it's not appropriate in an environment where we all need to work together.

Are some people going to take this too far? Sure, some will take it too far and others will not take it far enough. The right way to approach PC in my opinion, is to ask yourself if you would be offended by what your doing or saying if you were on the receiving end of your comments. If you would be offended, then it's probably not a good idea in an environment where you need to get along and work together.

Politcs vs PC...big difference. Military and its use is a politcial force. Political Correctness is a political game. There is probably few more conservative vocations than military service. That is due to its heritage, traditions and recognition of sacrafice and the honor of defending America. Political Correctness for the sake of social change goes against the grain of the very fabric of the military. The Corps spending millions on updating 'offending' verbiage in their documentation. While it sounds cheap, the Navy is going to spend a ton of money and manhours (can I still say that?) changing their enlisted rank titles NOW? They claim to be cash strapped as well. How do you tell the taxpayers you need even more money for a service that has money to spend on these 'feel good' programs?
