Standard issue at Fort Drum, and Alaska. Never seen the black ones...Not very comfortable but very warm

I was at a surplus store on Friday and I saw an air valve on them? Why an air valve?

LTC (Join to see) - they are a VB boot. Vapor barrier. The layer of air is what keep your feet warm. If you Conduct Airborne operations, you open the valve so the air can escape when you land. Once your on the ground, you close it.
Not sure how they get along with a pressurized cabin.

You open the valve before you leave the ground so the pressure in between the inner and outer layers can equalize. You close them as/upon landing. Same thing if your going to take them on a plane in you luggage or duffle bag; open the valves.

I was issued the white ones when I has stationed on FT Drum for obvious reasons. I had definitely put them into good use.<br><br>

Yes, It gets "a tad cold" up there, as you may know. And by "a tad cold", I mean -30 degree temps with a "normal" snow fall of two feet, LOL!
