Should all branches of service adopt one standard rank insignia?

Putting tradition and nostalgia aside for this question and looking at the increase in joint environments, would it be less confusing and more efficient if the services agreed on a standard insignia on duty and dress uniforms?

SPC John Cummings - And here the Marines I know were always telling me the Navy's job was to chauffer them to fights!

I still remember how a guest instructor from the British Army ended up just tacking a silver oak leaf on his rank slide. Otherwise, nobody would salute him. Of course, then there was the day that the Supe went for a walk at the Beast and EVEN THE CADRE didn't salute him until finally a plebe called his detail to attention and saluted the LTG. I wish I could have been a fly on the wall for the ensuing exchange.

SPC Eric McInteer Just remember, the entrance requirements for the Army are lower than they are for the Marines. So if an Army dog gets it, chances are the Marine already got it.

Just because Marines can do it doesn't mean Air Force can. Besides I used to enjoy being saluted by Air Force.

When I was a captain and had to do business with Navy, I'd try to do it over the phone. Funny how when you say "Captain Dews" to a sailor you get a much quicker response than saying the same to Army/Marine/Air Force.

It's kind of funny to know that a Navy/Coast Guard captain outranks all other Captains...

Maybe we should leave the rank alone. Just make an effort to learn the insignia you are working with, it makes you look more professional, you learn something else and it would be cheaper too. If the powers to be decided that we should do this, one of their family members or a company they hold stocks in would get a multi-billion dollar contract to conduct "studies" on which rank insignia we should use.

SSgt Gregory Guina Absolutely! You have time to retire and still be part of this project!

You forgot about the multi-million dollar contract to produce (import from China or the PI) the new rank insignia and hold the exclusive contracts to provide it to the services.

A couple of years ago the senior Navy leaders decided to remove the specialty symbols from Navy rank insignia. It was part of an effort to make Navy ratings gender neutral. For example, a Boilerman became a Boiler Technician. So, with the Boatswain Mate rank insignia having crossed anchors on his crow, and being addressed as Boatswains Mate so and so, they removed the anchors and the form of address would be Petty Officer so and so. The fleet erupted! The eggheads in Washington didn't realize the strong attachment and pride sailors take in their ratings. They scrapped the idea, and we still have occupational symbols on our crows (Navy slang for rank insignia above E-4).
