I wouldnt call it self destruct although they are not helping their cause at all. I think ALL PARTIES need to sit down reevaluate the state of this country and sit down GROW UP and do what they were sworn to do be for THE PEOPLE.

The reason the Republican party can swing so far right is because the Dems are on an uncontrolled run off the left horizon.

That works both ways, what we are seeing on a national level is what we've already seen in state politics here in California. There is a perception around the nation that California is super liberal but in reality the state as a whole leans only slightly left of center.
The problem is the Republican party here has move VERY far to the right, anybody who doesn't loudly beat a drum of deporting all the illegals, banning all abortion and throwing people off of welfare is branded a "RINO" and is easily defeated in the primary election.
This allows the Democrats to drift further to the left and still appear (more) sane. Even if the electorate would prefer moderates most of the time if given the choice between a batcrap crazy Republican and a slightly less crazy Democrat they will choose the Democrat almost every time.
The net result is that both our state senate and assembly have strong Democratic majorities and Democrats have every statewide office.
