Does anyone think that the current downsizing, I call it gutting, is a good idea?

Yes, a quality-based downsizing is a good idea.

No, it is never a good idea during the time of war and possible more so-called conflicts. Politicians constantly getting us involved with other countries civil wars that don't have anything to do with the U.S. It is putting our Forces at risk with fewer numbers, downsizing and deploying with less is almost like suicide.
