What can retired service members do to best help and support current service members?

You can take the soldier out of the Army but you can't take the Army out of the soldier - such is my case.
I loved serving and since retiring, I've run a family readiness group for my old unit, volunteered at military events, lead Cub & Boy Scouts at Memorial & Veterans Day observances and sent cards & care packages all in an effort to show support for my brothers and sisters in uniform.
I really want to hear from you service members on duty if there are any bases that are not covered. Is there some support that is missing, that volunteers and Scout units could get involved in to help you out.
Thanks to all of you for your continuing service

I'll give you that one soon to be SGM, though I haven't missed but a few town referendums since I was 18. I'd bet there are too many out there that don't though.

I believe (and this area has seemed to improve over the last several years, thanks to social media and the internet in general), veterans can continue to assist our service members leaving active duty with employment and/or education opportunities. I know a lot of civilian employers tout being "military-friendly" or "vet friendly", and this is great, but I know from my perspective I feel more confident when I talk with a veteran who has gone through the process themselves. That makes me feel "OK, they did it, it worked for them, and when the time comes I can too".
I would also agree that giving back to a community with volunteerism or community service, or working with veterans' organizations (for example, VFW or American Legion membership) is also a great way to help.
