I am quickly approaching my 5 year mark, that happens in early April. I have been a specialist for 38 months, my MOS is 94F. I was on a TDY deployment in early 2014 when I was persuaded to re-enlist needs of the Army, persuaded almost to the point of coercion right at the point where the Army was seriously starting to draw down. 94F has had the points maxed for 25 months now, and I have stalled in my progression. I have concentrated on my bachelors, I will graduate in September this year, so the point change was effective for me. Still, I am lacking in military classes for points, my correspondence is still low, and I received minimal awards from my prior unit simply because I was in the support company of a aviation unit and almost nobody in my troupe received awards. My question is, and I am posting here because I have not received much help from my company retention NCO, nor my BN career counselor, how can I stay in the Army. My ETS is in FEB2018, and the career counselor tells me I do not have enough time left to reclass unless I go for civil affairs. I am not in my reenlistment window, and still have about four months lefthere in Europe before I can start any process. Please, I really want to continue to serve, how can I achieve this and still progress? Last thing, I enlisted in 2011 at 40 years old, right before it changed back to 35.

It is strange to me that your career counselor told you that you have "no time" to reclass to anything but Civil Affairs. CA has a pretty long tooth to tail to qualify and get trained in. There is a selection process. Then the course itself. Language requirements. Airborne School.
It is a great field, but not one that you shake and bake into.
You have two full years to find another MOS and get trained. That seems to me a very long time to not have enough time.
I think you need a second opinion.

This is one of those tough ones, your field is over filled, and doubt it will come down soon. You are about to complete your bachelors, so complete that, look at correspondence and anything available at your duty station in the way of military education. Now some other areas, how is your PT score, how is your marksmanship? Areas where you can pick up points right? Next area as bright young man (I say that as I am now 51) do you have any Battalion/Brigade Boards for enlisted people? Back before Sept 11, 2001, there were BN/BDE boards for Soldier of the month, quarter, year. These can often be a fast track for lower enlisted. Shows you are motivated, can demonstrate your intelligence, and that you are trying to move ahead. Things to consider. Even if you bomb out the first time, keep going till you get it right. Be that guy that people come to for the right answer for things MOS technical, you may be surprised at what will come your way.

Perhaps look into the CA field. Last I heard, they were promoting people to the next rank upon successful completion of the course. Just a thought though. Good luck.
