I'm surprised it's not already? Seems like something that should be done at basic training. The Marines do this really well with requiring Tan belt completion at basic.

I say the same thing Sir. I went through basic in 2012 and they had started teaching us the beginning of it but we weren't certified or anything. I had to seek out the classes myself. I think that it's a great thing for all soldiers though.

I understand the need for combatives and physical training, but I don't think a minimum is necessary outside of combat arms. If anything, the professionalism, instruction training, and mentoring aspect of martial arts is what really hit home with me. It is great to be able to defend yourself, but today's current hand to hand systems really instill discipline and education more than ability.

SFC (Join to see) it wouldn't hurt, its like your weapon and APFT, it should be a requirement. What if it comes down to hand/hand? The ROE can change anytime, why not be prepared?

I feel the exact same way SFC. All around. As a soldier, female and person. You won't always find yourself in a situation where you will have a weapon system, no matter if it's stateside or down range. We train as we fight right? This is a way to fight.

SFC (Join to see) I used to teach Combatives I to the Privates in Basic Combat Training. They actually love it! Its up to the COC to continue to prepare the force and ensure TTPs are in effect.

We had to go thorough it in BCT as well. I loved it. So far I have completed the 2nd level and have loved them both. It's a totally different story from BCT though. That may be the only thing for some soldiers but it's still good training.

Sure, it would be nice. But how will this be facilitated? For example, I would LOVE to get my Soldiers to be CLS certified, but being a TPU, just can't rightly find the time to get the 40 hr training done. And, higher ups certainly won't authorize Soldiers to come in on orders to get CLS certified. So, there is no way Combatives certification is going to happen.

SSG Livingston, that is a good point as far as time. I know that for my MOS, combatives is a requirement. I had to find the time to go my own. Outside of that, it was fairly easy for me to go. I just told my 1SGT that I wanted to go and they made it happen. The same worked for others that are interested. I am not saying that they should all go at once but at some point in the span of their career, especially if you are being activated for any reason. It would be a challenge but as you said, it would be nice.

SFC (Join to see) - Sometimes it sucks being a 13 pax TPU with no FTS.
