I can understand your situation. I've been stationed at both. I loved both locations. Everything is so far from Ft Irwin, that driving can get old very fast. You do have Las Vegas, San Diego, LA, etc. for those long weekends. Some months, I wouldn't even leave post. Was married, so I didn't mind. If you're single, that can be pretty tough. I tell people Ft Irwin is like being overseas stateside.

Good luck in finding a swap.

If not, use your time there to get ahead on schooling (make lemon aide out of lemons).

Agreed. I too was stationed at NTC and although it bacame a blessing years doen the road, it was very isolated. We used to get $60 a month isolation pay because Barstow was outside the 35 mile allowed boundary. They moved the sign that says "Welcome to NTC" closer to Barstow.....ever notice? The welcome sign is miles away from the initial checkpoint/welcome center. At least as a 92A you won't live in the desert as OPFOR. Congrats on the retirement MAJ Steve Sheridan.

If you have been to Bagram you have been to Caserme Ederle. There is concertina wire along the walls of the base. I thought to myself they are just the Italians. What are you doing? I tried to stay at Ft. Riley. Great family post!

Ah, well never been to Bagram, so that would explain a lot. Also never been to Ft Riley, but if I had my choice, I want Hunter Army Airfield.

Started my officer career at Stewart, but would hang out in Savannah on the weekends. Great duty assignment.
