I have after along time and iaw my Pyschriatrist decided I needed to attend the IOP course at BAMC Ft. Sam Houston.  I was so against it at first because I didn't know whether it would have a negative affect at my unit as being tagged as soft.  After attending the course I realized how much I did need it and have learned an abundance of copeing mechanisms.  Now the course is 80 hours and signed by an LTC.  Would you think if I included it on my PERMS, would the promotion board look favorably on this or negatively.  If the consensus is negative, I plan on not putting it in my file and ERB.

I do not think it would hurt your promotion chance. In fact it seems to me that you are now have a tool that can allow you to help other Soldiers. Yes, some will notice that on your board packet, but I don't think it is a game changer.

SFC,

I've always been taught by my betters that anything that adds value to the group as a whole is a benefit.  In complete honesty, this is the first time I've heard of that course, but from the background you provided, it sounds like it's related to stress/finding ways to deal with that stress.  To me, I think someone in your position could potentially turn that into a *huge* force multiplier for a unit by just applying those methods and mentoring younger soldiers that need those ways to cope, especially without having to visit a behavioral health center themselves and receive the stigma associated with it.

Given, I've never been a part of a board.  Hopefully someone can shed some light on the positive/negative aspects for the benefit of the community.

While you've benefited from the attending, not sure why you would need to put on your record. I'd play it safe and not, but don't know. Interested to find out if anyone who has sat on boards know better.
