I have seen some servicemembers compete on shows for singing like American Idol, beauty pageants, etc. What are your thoughts: should they be able to compete? Should they have to take leave to compete on their "own" time?

I think it's fine and a great recruiting tool.  I was on American Idol.  I know for a fact that I had some young kids go see their recruiter just after talking to me and seeing that Soldier's are real people too.
I've always wanted to go on Fear Factor too.  Or Wipe Out.  I could crush that obstacle course!  Maybe one day.

Back in the day Military members appeared on "The Price Is Right" in uniform.  Never heard anything negative about that.

Indeed they should continue to compete. We in the military know we are a talented organization with tons of people who do great things in Soldier shows. Not only does it allow the world to see past the stigma that some media organizations like to paint us with, but it allows the Soldier/Sailor/Airman or Marine to showcase their talent and follow their passion.

I think units should continue to allow them to compete as long as it doesnt degrade the mission or the units capability to conduct operations.

Yes, they should CONTINUE to be allowed to compete.

Most are good news stories for the military, which can keep the military in good spirits with the American people, in a time when we're fading away from their thoughts.

I have seen them on TV before. I don't think nothing about it. Most don't last long but if we are going to ensure they are the best at whatever that TV show is about then they most likely wouldn't compete. I would say that by wearing the uniform while on the show it is a direct reflection on the branch and that unit. I wouldn't do it.
