Ever have an odd memory that you thought would make a wonderful scene in a Movie? Well, here's my odd memory. I guess because we were chatting on one of the Posts about Nuns. I grew up around them. And I grew up in the inner city. One of a dozen "tough" neighborhoods. Not dangerous like today's neighborhoods...tough kids. Not dirty. Everyone had been in scraps of some sort or another. Bullies abounded.
So one day when I was about six or seven, I was carrying my Mom's groceries home in my little wagon with the wooden sides. Across the street from us, a Bully about fifteen or sixteen was wailing on a poor kid about ten or so. The Bus Stopped and we couldn't see what was happening on the other side of the street. My Mom was already yelling at the Bully to stop, and ready to run across the street to confront them. (She wasn't afraid...she was mad.) As soon as the Bus moved though, this is the scene we saw:

A half dozen Nuns who looked like Penguins in their Black Robes, and White Horseshoe Headgear, had their umbrellas out. A couple of them were stabbing the bully with them, the rest of them were using their umbrellas like baseball bats and taking swings that would have made Babe Ruth proud. One nun had the little kid behind her, and her umbrella out in front in the "En garde" position.
The bully stumbled, fell, and was hidden for second as he was pummeled by flashing umbrellas and furious swats from some truly angry Nuns. He finally got his feet and fled.
My Mother yelled out across the street:
"Thank you , Sisters!"
One of them yelled back: "Just doing the Lord's work."
And maybe that is why I have a soft spot for Nuns even to this day.

I was going to say I always thought my mom was an only child until you described your mother.

Fearless. There is no doubt in my mind that my Mom would have crossed that street. I have no clue, at six years old, and as small as a toddler - what I was supposed to do to help. Maybe bite his ankle? But if Mom was going over...so was I.

SGT Kevin Hughes While i Have Endless respect for Sister Helen Prejan and the Mary Knoll Sisters that Protested the School of the Americas, My Memories of One Order of Catholic Nuns is not So Fond. While My Sister spent most of her Education in Catholic Schools. Other than 2 Years, I was in Public School Those 2 Years were "Problematic" The "Nuns" didn't like My Preference for Playing with the "Irish". Now Irish is a "Unique" Term. At the Time Irish Could Mean Irish, It could also mean "Black" (Since the Sisters would not use the N Word). Yeah I Liked Playing with Both Kinds of Irish.

PO1 William "Chip" Nagel - Yeah, I never dwarfed anyone. I am the tallest of the 12 kids. And age has shrunk them even further. I might be the only one left over five foot two.

SGT Kevin Hughes - My Father was 6'4, I was 6'5". Meeting Someone Taller was "Unique" When I Literally Ran into Bill Russell that was a Bit Disconcerting. Bouncing My Nose off His Sternum! Bloody Hell! or Meeting My DISBO Disbursing Officer on USS California CGN-36, LTJG David Robinson, OMG, I Like busting on LTJGs but One that Towers over Me? Damn It!

PO1 William "Chip" Nagel - My Dad was the smallest in his family at six foot even. His brother Frank was six foot ten. His other brother was six six. So he was the shrimp. Sadly, only me and my sister Kay hit five foot six. My great great grandfather, Big Jim Farrassee was Moses Cleveland's Bodyguard, and stood six foot ten, and weighed 320 pound of pure muscle (He died from trying to life a pony with one hand...so the myth goes). But those genes skipped all of us I have a half dozen nephews that are over six foot four, and one niece...but it skipped my generation completely.
And, of course, my favorite sport was basketball.

SGT Kevin Hughes - Always thought it was a Riot How a "Little" Lady of Scotch, English Heritage Bred some Ungodly Tall, Prussian Scottish Goons. Grandma Irma. She Could just Flash an Expression of Displeasure and Put Her Hoodlums in Check! Sons, Grandsons, LOL!
