While there has been speculation that Hitler allowed the great escape to happen he did as well intervened on a more tactical level and replace the ineffective artillery shells with time-fused anti air shells to cause maximum damage. As well he insisted that Dunkirk should be a SS operation, in case the Wermacht had any inclination to let the British escape. Hitler was spot on with this allegation that would bear fruit at the Battle for Castle Itter.
Going to see it with some friend this weekend so it will be interesting to see if and how this tidbit is included or excluded from the story line.

I thought i knew a bit about Dunkirk, which I did in general but there were a lot of things Here I wasn't aware of. History does skip a lot of details. What was posted here gave Me a better understanding of what happened and why than I had before. Guess I can see why mentioning the French often was avoided with the inept leadership of some. With the British and the long standing Military tradition Dunkirk was something perhaps I hadn't understood as well until it was spelled a better here than anything I've seen before. This was an excellent post, thank You for posting this Captain Durish !

As Louis L'Amour wrote, school only provides an outline of knowledge. It's up to each us to fill in the gaps. We fill in the gaps that interest or concern us the most. As for me, before I write a book, I research every detail, in great detail. Before writing about the 2-year period in Cuba, from the time Castro returned to the island from exile in Mexico until he took command of the government, I studied the island from pre-Columbian to modern times. I not only read what historians write on a given period, but also look for diaries and correspondence written by those who lived through the events. The more I study the more gaps I find in my knowledge.
