I saw a photo of the VP arriving at an air station and the airman/NCO was saluting and she was returning his salute. AR 600-25 talks about honors for the President as CinC but not the VP. I tried to think back if I had ever seen or heard of this before. Nothing.

That sounds about right. The POTUS is a special case of Civilian. He does not have to return the salute (many do, as a show of respect to the Armed Forces). There are no other Civilians in the entire Federal Government who merit a military salute.
We salute each other; it is a privilege that I personally cherish. I will NEVER tire of giving or receiving a salute whenever and wherever appropriate.
Prisoners are denied the privilege of the salute. That makes what Col Hogan does on "Hogan's Heroes" so much more hilarious.

Lt Col Timothy Cassidy-Curtis I know this is a convo from 3 years ago, but I’m just now seeing all of these shots of SM saluting the VP when boarding air craft. Has this always been a thing, or just new under this administration?
