When will Optum start covering alternative therapies for PTSD, such as Equine Therapy?

I am a disabled Veteran who owns and operates a Therapeutic Horsemanship program for those affected by PTSD. This therapy was part of the VA spending plan, but it is only accessible through the Adaptive Sport Grant. Mental Health is not a sport, so why would Optum Care not cover this therapy? Therapeutic horsemanship programs are available across the US and the majority of them rely on grants and donations. If a program does not receive a grant, then their program is at risk, as are the Veterans who rely on the program to help them heal.

Great question. There is a veteran horse therapy program in Virginia Beach, and I would love to participate.

I should have done some research before posting. It turns out the therapy is free to veterans, at least here in Virginia.

Generally speaking, if the program is free to Veterans, then they have received a grant making that possible. What happens when they don't receive a grant? Then the program is at risk as the organization scrambles to find funding for the program.
