The militant group Hamas, launched a surprise attack on Israel on Saturday. Since then, Israel has put the enclave Gaza Strip under siege from the sides it controls, cutting off essential supplies, and water. It’s only electricity power station has run out of fuel.

With Gaza effectively cut off, the humanitarian situation is rapidly deteriorating, Egypt has discussed plans with the United States and others to provide humanitarian aid corridors through its border.

Newsday heard from Amr Moussa, a former Egyptian Foreign Minister who also has served as Secretary General of the Arab League, about setting up safe corridors to Gaza for aid and fleeing Palestinians.

"Corridors should be open for the aid to get in. Are we creating a new wave of Palestinian refugees? We call on the Palestinians to stay where they are to stick to their land, to their homes. The help coming from abroad will help them. The Security Council should order a ceasefire and call on Israel to end this collective punishment policy."
