Chinese scientists isolated a gene (D-Supp) in tardigrades that makes a protein that protects DNA from radiation damage. Aware that this could cause complications from unintended consequences (because the gene is interspecies), the Chinese researchers noticed that the side effects weren't as bad as they presumed. In fact, the stem cells they experimented on seemed to grow faster at certain stages of growth. 90% of the modified cells were able to withstand X-Ray radiation that would have killed a human being. They are moving to the next step of experimentation (modifying bone marrow to produce blood cells resistant to radiation damage) citing potential benefits such as resistance to cancer, Parkinsons, etc. Every potential benefit to mankind likewise has an equal and opposite potential to detriment mankind when used for nefarious purposes and some are suggesting that the Chinese want to create radiation-resistant super soldiers.
Are these experiments ethical and what are the implications for the future of mankind?
