My unit is telling me that the AGSU is ONLY for daily wear and not for formal occasions such as promotion boards. From what I have read in the regulations I believe this is false, but I can't find proof or a supposed MILPER message to confirm or deny what my COC is saying.

The intent of the AGSU is to be for daily wear and the ASU is to be for formal occasions. That being said, if the LOI/MOI for Promotion Boards state SMs are to wear the ASU...then that is what you wear.
AR 670-1 states in Chapter 11, 12 and 13 (sections 11-3, 12-3 and 13-3) for wearing of the ASU, there are some key phrases that needs to be paid attention to. And that is: "unless otherwise directed
by the commander" and "When designated by the host of an event."
So, if the President of the Promotion Boards give guidance that ASUs will be worn at the Board, then ASU is what will be worn.

Yep it depends…… so welcome to the Army and we now share the pains of the Marines.
The hole that needs to be closed is that I understand ASUs are not TRADOC issued.
So now there’s a whole new process in the Army that needs to be just the way we do things and that is new soldiers actually using their uniform allowance to acquire ASUs
I can see a SGT board let AGSU be ok but then I could see an E6 board check for high speeds with an ASU requirement

MSG (Join to see) and CPT (Join to see) have good info and points.
An issue to be recognized is new Soldiers are not receiving the ASU during IET and are only receiving the AGSU. Some are not even receiving all of their accoutrements for said AGSU due to apparent supply issues and are being told their units will square them away.
Then you have some units losing it over new joe showing up in their AGSU when the commander put out ASU's and poor snuffy doesn't know what he did wrong. Heck my new private can't even order anything for his AGSU through supply since we don't have any of it, Guard problems.

The Army goes through some variation of this nonsense every time they change any of the uniforms that people actually wear. The Army publishes a Mandatory Possession Date for the new uniform and a last date to wear the old uniform -- which always leaves a period when both uniforms are authorized but which also leaves many individuals in an awkward position.
1) How about the soldier who will be getting out BEFORE the mandatory possession date? They have no requirement to ever own the new uniform, but are going to face pressure to spend the money to buy one anyway.
2) Soldiers who attend IET prior to the Mandatory Possession Date might be issued the old uniform even through the new uniform is already authorized and being worn elsewhere. These soldiers will be forced spend money to buy the new uniform long before their old uniform is worn out. And, no, the uniform allowance won't really cover the cost. (If it's the IET duty uniform, some IET soldiers will be issued two old uniforms and two new uniforms instead of four of the either uniform).

It is the new service uniform and ASU is for formal wear; however, it's not mandatory to have the AGSU yet. So the ASU can still be worn as a service uniform and especially if that's the uniform listed in the MOI for your unit's promotion board.
I didn't think promotion boards were considered "formal" events though. I thought that was more things like military balls or certain other special occasions that require formal wear. *shrug*.

SSG (Join to see) - Do they want to get promoted or not? If ASU is the uniform for the board, then that's the uniform for the board. Suck it up. You know how many uniforms I have bought in my time in the Army? I had to buy ASU when it came out. I had to get the new APFU and the OCP ACUs before I went to SLC - and I was an Air Force base. I was lucky they had some Army uniform stuff but I ordered the rest online from AAFES in pieces.
I am not going to buy the AGSU since I retire before that wear date but if my commander said it's the service uniform, I guess I'm buying it even though I can retire in 2 1/2 years. One more shot from the big green weenie I guess...

The problem with buying the ASU right now is Clothing and Sales is primarily selling the AGSU so it is hard to buy a full set of ASU. I was issued the ASU but I currently cannot find new pants that I need because of the lack of production or shortage in ASU uniform pieces.

SSG (Join to see) - Then that is the conversation you need to have. This isn't about you trying to find a regulatory loophole to get out of wearing the ASU, its about your difficulty in meeting mission requirements.

SSG (Join to see) - I have bought things online at aafes. com. I had to buy most of my ACUs (OCP pattern) online because the clothing sales on the AF base I was at during the time didn't have a lot of it. I think I bought the APFU online too. All in pieces.
Did you bring up to your leadership that there is a shortage of ASU pieces of the uniform?
