My Secret clearance expired in 3 months if I don't take a job using it. I did not take the job I got with the Airforce because I made the excuse that $21 an hour was not enough. I was really actually worried about liking it and then losing it. I make maybe $22-23 net driving uber but it's a waste of my potential. Also, the rideshare model is going to change radically soon. In exactly what way I do not know. I'm kinda addicted to making my own schedule, having time at work to listen to books on tape, and just thinking. Does anyone know of a job that pays at least $20 an hour, is OK with a Vet with PTSD, and I will not die of boredom in. I have physical security experience so a after hours security officer job would do the trick to keep my clearance till I can get my CompTIA A+ or Security+. My A+ for life does not cut the mustard with the DOD requirements for CompTia Certs.

Is the AF job still available? The reason I ask is despite the fact it is low pay, you still might want to do it for a little while, and I would imagine you could continue a side job as well. I wasn't sure if you meant expired as in, you're coming up on the investigation period, or the 2-year mark after you leave a billet/employment with the military. Either way, you get the clearance renewed for at least two more years, giving you more time to consider a better job requiring a clearance.

I am one year away from expiring my 2-year clock, and I'm trying to find work through my company to do a stint with the DoD so that I can renew my it (I had my reinvestigation not long before I left government work a year ago). I once considered signing up for any escort duty they might have for people with clearances as sort of a part time gig. Unfortunately, my company would not allow that.

Maj Kevin "Mac" McLaughlin - the job I got only required a Secret not a TS. I have started a TS in the past so the paperwork was still even done on the website and was directly carried over to Secret. I believe I could get a TS once my credit is fixed. Of course to do that I need to get a better job and avoid any catastrophes like global pandemics or world wars for a few years.

Maj Kevin "Mac" McLaughlin - The issue with the certs is that I do not learn well in a vacuum. I learn by doing. Its very challenging to listen to a video and then rattle back the answers. Most of what I've seen on the videos is related to things I've dealt with in non-security IT and then referred to Security. I'm on the outside looking in and its hard to get "in" with out the skills one can gain by being "in". I also have crippling test anxiety. Its also hard to study when your working 60 hours a week. I know there are people who work 80 hours a week. I want to do this but I have my limits. I might not be physically exhausted after 60 hours driving but my mind is shot.

Maj Kevin "Mac" McLaughlin - The whole afghan thing is quite a human tragedy. Nation Building is a awesome thing but when it fails... wow the human cost. I am amazed by the people who are now becoming Americans. Just like the hill tribesman who fought with us in Vietnam. The story of how some of them were STILL fighting for "The President" decades later is heartwarming and also very sad.

I do not qualify for GI bill and I frittered away my Student Aid taking way more credits than I needed and I'm only half way though my masters in internet security with no way to pay for it.

Another issue is I suffer from test anxiety and do not do well in interviews. Most of my really stellar job possibility's were based on personal relationships, and referrals. There have been some amazing chances in my life but I was not aware of my PTSD and so was to afraid to apply. I'm hoping to build my following here and try to find a mentor who might know some one at least willing to talk to me a bit. Im not certain were to begin. I feel like I'm running out of time in more ways than just the 3 months on my clearance. Im 52 years old and I've finally started to live after getting partial treatment for my PTSD. Why am I not going to the VA its a long story.

I know you turned down going to work for the Air Force before, but have you tried USAJobs.com*? State and Federal government jobs, Veteran hiring preference, tons of jobs that pay well in excess of $20/hour, etc.

Make sure to enable "more filters" and you can add in additional items just as your clearance, certifications, etc.
