7 July 1944: XX Bomber Command B-29s conduct their first raid on Japan from bases in the Chengdu area of southern China.

Such missions were extremely logistics intensive and rarely did B-29s conduct more than one mission a month against targets on Kyūshū, the southernmost of Japan's major home islands.

For details, see: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/XX_Bomber_Command

ILLUSTRATIONS: (1) 58th BW B-29s shown shortly after takeoff from Chengdu, China, participate in the second B-29 raid on Japan--the first from bases in China. (2) 45th BS, 40th BG B-29 "Eddie Allen" releases its bombs over Japan as a 101st Sentai Ki-84 flames an engine on another B-29. The camel symbols on the planes nose represent missions flown from India carrying supplies to Chengdu. Don't you appreciate the "curves", aesthetics, fine engineering from the hand built & hand tuned engines. Never the less the history they had to contribute within the military as well as our history?
I think they are absolutely stunning! Like a fine tuned 454 In an old classic Ford truck? It's extremely appealing and a thing of rare beauty!
